THE ORIGIN OF KARANGDOWO

One day, there were brothers from Surabaya. The older brother named Tumenggung Kobar and the younger brother named Ki Ageng Cingkring. They are Buddhist Geni.

They explored every land in Java to found the suitable areas for them to lived. Then, they found a land beside the river and there was a coral that stretched along the river, so Tumenggung and Ki Ageng Cingkring gave the name of the area "Karangdowo". Karang means land or yard, and Dowo means long. So, Karangdowo means elongated land.

After settling and living, Tumenggung Kobar has a son named Wongsopati. He embraced the teachings of Islam, which subsequently became an elder in Karangdowo Village. A few years later, Tumenggung Kobar died. Before he died he gave a message that his body be burned.

Finally, according to his message. At the time of burning the body Tumenggung Kobar appeared a miracle. Tumenggung Kobar's body was lifted up with the smoke that flew into the sky while saying "O my grandchildren, don’t follow my religion, follow the religion that Wongsopati followed and if you want to meet me, come to Sigeseng.
